ENGLISH FOR YOUNG CHILDREN

The sooner children start learning a language the better. A generation ago, children started learning English relatively late in their schooling and this meant that they left school with a very limited command of the language. Nowadays, many children take their first steps to learning a foreign language when they are 3 or 4 years old. These children can expect to have a good level of English by the time they're 13 or 14 years old and can aim to obtain the First Certificate by the time they're 16. The sooner children start learning, the earlier they get to an acceptable level in English.

Cambridge School has run young children's programmes for 15 years and so has the experience necessary to make them a success. What's more, (7) our maximum class size of only ten students ensures that the children get the individual attention they need.

Our infants' courses have three main objectives:

  1. To inculcate a positive attitude to the language by making the classes as fun as possible.   Teachers make pedagogic use of songs, stories, videos, games and puzzles to achieve this end.
  2. To teach the children a range of basic English vocabulary, the first building blocks of the language. Children learn the correct pronunciation from their native teacher.
  3. To rapidly develop children's receptive understanding of natural, native spoken English because all the classroom instructions are in English.
All the latest research shows that the sooner children start learning a foreign language, the sooner they get to an adequate level. Our experience of many years in Cambridge School bears this out.
